Guide to Choosing Tags for Your Community

Learn how to create and manage tags to personalize member experiences and optimize community engagement.

Why Tags Matter

Tags help members navigate your community, find relevant content, and enhance AI-powered recommendations. A well-structured tagging system drives engagement, improves searchability, and personalizes the user experience.

Step 1: Define the Purpose of Tags

Tags should align with your community’s goals and help members:

  • Find relevant content (e.g., courses, groups, events)

  • Connect with like-minded individuals

  • Enhance AI-driven recommendations

Types of Tags to Consider:

  1. Content Categories – Topics, subjects, or themes (e.g., "Marketing," "Design," "Leadership")

  2. Learning Stages – Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced

  3. Engagement Types – Webinar, Course, Discussion, Event, Resource

  4. Industry-Specific Tags – Based on your field (e.g., "UX Design," "Finance")

  5. Community Interests – Align with what your members care about (e.g., "Mental Health," "Entrepreneurship")

Step 2: Create a Structured Tagging System

Use a tiered structure to keep tags meaningful:

  • Primary Tags → Broad categories (e.g., "Business Strategy")

  • Secondary Tags → Subcategories (e.g., "Branding," "Customer Research")

  • Tertiary Tags → Niche or contextual tags (e.g., "Storytelling," "Emotional Branding")

Best Practices:

  • Limit Primary Tags (30-40 core topics per community)

  • Use Consistent Naming Conventions (e.g., "Product Design" vs. "Product-Design")

  • Avoid Redundant Tags (e.g., "Design Thinking" vs. "Design-Thinking")

  • Keep Tags Short & Intuitive (1-3 words max)

Step 3: Community Setup: Add or Edit Tags

Navigate to Community Setup > Interests in the admin panel to manage your tags. You can delete any prepopulated tags that aren’t relevant to your community and add new tags that reflect your members’ interests.

Recommendations:

  • Include 30-40 tags to provide a broad selection.

  • Regularly update tags based on member feedback and engagement analytics.

By carefully curating the tags in this section, you set the foundation for a personalized and engaging member experience.

Step 4: Optimize for AI and Personalization

Neutopia’s AI search and recommendation engine learns from how members interact with tags. To maximize impact:

  • Use tags that reflect user behavior – What topics generate engagement?

  • Encourage user-generated tagging – Let members suggest relevant tags.

  • Refine tags over time – Review analytics and adjust based on usage.

How Tags Influence Member Onboarding

The tags you create in the admin settings will be the ones that your members see when they onboard for the first time. During onboarding, members will be asked to select at least six tags that represent their self-selected interests. These selections personalize their homepage, ensuring they see content, courses, groups, events, and other members with similar interests.

When tagging content, courses, groups, and events, you can choose any tags that are relevant, but it’s recommended to include one or two of the primary community tags to align with the member-selected tags. This ensures content appears in personalized recommendations and enhances the user experience.

Step 5: Implement & Communicate Tagging Guidelines

Make sure your team and community admins:

  • Have a standardized tag list to avoid duplicates

  • Train members on how to tag their content effectively

  • Review tag usage monthly and adjust based on data insights

Step 6: Monitor & Iterate Based on Analytics

Key Metrics to Track:

  • Most used tags → Identify what’s trending

  • Search performance → Are members finding what they need?

  • Engagement per tag → Which topics drive the most interaction?
